VALENTINE’S DAY WEEKEND: JOIN US FOR ROMANTIC REMIX!

Chicago Philharmonic welcomes Susan Platts
On Sunday, February 16 at 3:00 p.m., at Nichols Hall in
Evanston, end your Valentine’s Day Weekend on a high
note with a celebration of musical inspiration, and three
very different approaches to the same old love story!
Romantic Remix is all about music inspired by other
sources, and starts with Siegfried Idyll, in which Wagner
celebrates his domestic bliss. Wagner reimagined themes
from his opera Siegfried and presented this piece to his
wife in honor of her birthday and the birth of their son.
From bliss we move to longing, as we welcome mezzo-soprano Susan Platts to the
stage to perform Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder, inspired by the soul-searching poetry of
Frederick Rückert.
The concert closes with something completely different, as the orchestra explores
music for Molière’s play/ballet Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, a hilarious satire
about a father whose ambitions push his daughter and her suitor to incredible
lengths to get what they want! First we hear themes by Jean-Baptiste Lully, who
wrote the original music for the work in 1670. Next, we hear these same themes
in a very different take on this satirical comedy by Richard Strauss. Actors from
Chicago’s renowned Court Theatre perform spirited excerpts from the play,
bringing to life the inspiration behind the music of Lully and Strauss.
Nichols Hall is located at 1490 Chicago Ave. in Evanston.
