Hershey Felder's "Aliyah" Concerto

Ars Viva is thrilled to have Hershey Felder performing his own composition on our opening concerts September 25 and 26. Below are his own words in describing this poignant concerto."The meaning of the Hebrew word ALIYAH is "to rise up," and given that Jerusalem to the worldwide Jewish Diaspora is considered the highest point in the world, anyone who moves to make their lives in Israel is said to make ALIYAH.

From a musical standpoint, one of the techniques employed in the composition of this work for piano and orchestra is the sudden and deliberate use of rising keys at specific moments. From the beginning of the work - a suggestion of a musical anagram for the letters H-I-T-L-E-R coupled with the flavor of an Eastern European Jew, the musical trajectory takes us through the beginnings of WW II with hints ofCrystalnacht (The Night of Broken Glass), with a first movement entitled 1939; through the devastation, destruction and mourning with but only a memory of what was - 1945; up through the creation of the State of Israel, a direct result of the War in Europe, 1948.

It is the intention of ALIYAH to paint a picture of the time using familiar thematic material, where from the ashes, the State of Israel was born."
Hershey Felder is known to audiences worldwide for his acclaimed theatrical productions George Gershwin Alone, Monsieur Chopin, Beethoven As I Knew Him and Maestro: The Art of Leonard Bernstein. Combining his abilities as an actor and concert pianist, he has appeared in these works as well as in solo concerts in more than 4,000 performances worldwide.

Drawn from the spectacular London recordings, these brilliant and beloved orchestrations by Stanley Black of favorite Jewish melodies have never before been heard in the US in live performances: Havah Nagilah; Yes, My Darling Daughter; And the Angels Sing; Hebrew Melody; A letter to my Mother; Raisins and Almonds; Eili, Eili; Tzena Tzena; Freylach and Finale.
The following notes were written by Mr. Black for the original Decca recordings:

Historians and sociologists have for long debated whether the Jews are a nation, a race, or a religious group, and I suppose the correct answer is that they are a unique mixture of all three. But whatever they are ethnically, the Jews are a people whose 3000 years of historical background has been largely nomadic. Their culture and music stem from many sources and mirror the diverse environments of their migrations. Thus, although their music is basically semitic-oriental, there are also overtones of Russia and Poland; echoes of Rumania, Spain and Morocco; reflections of the Yemen and the Negev.

In choosing these melodies, I feel I have selected those which are not only the most familiar in the rich heritage of Jewish music, but also those which reflect the widest cross section of Jewish life. For the scoring of these melodies I utilized a very large orchestra and choir, not because I wanted an overpowering weight of sound per se, but because the kind of arrangements I had in mind required the most varied possible palette of orchestral and vocal color.

I have tried to reflect many things in these scores: not only the memory of a centuries-old struggle for existence, but also the comparatively recently acquired dignity of recognition as a nation; not only the evocative nostalgia of a fable related by a grandparent or a story read in the Bible, but also the joys and sorrows of the present day, felt as part of humanity rather than as an isolated group. I have tried to reflect the roots— roots old and new, whether in a Russian village or in a Polish ghetto; in the East End of London or the Lower East Side of New York; in the simplicity of a desert settlement or the sophistication of the great urban centers of the world. I have tried to reflect the characteristic traits— the inherent melancholy, the irrepressible gaiety, the resigned fatalism; the humor and warmth of the family circle; the instinctive respect for the Patriarch whether he be religious teacher or head of the family; and the unselfconscious love of the Matriarch who will ever be, simply, "Mamma." I have tried to echo the love of traditional ceremony both sacred and secular, the love of music, the love of dancing, the love of living.

It could be argued that these traits could also apply, in varying degrees, to all people, and I suppose they can. The Jews, after all, are only one segment of the much larger family of world humanity, and if this album is indeed "Music of a People," it is also music for all people.

Ground-breaking Time for Three (Tf3) started as a trio of students (two violins & bass) at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music. After considerable experimentation with blending bluegrass and jazz improvisation, the three formed Tf3, an exciting new ensemble with a unique sound. Their high energy and extraordinary music-making has led to multiple creative collaborations. The Concerto 4-3 was composed for them by Jennifer Higdon, winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Music.

Exiles in Hollywood

This weekend's Elgin Symphony Orchestra concerts will be the culmination of our Exiles in Hollywood Festival. I have been looking forward to performing this program all season. Not only are we featuring great music that is underperformed, but Miklos Rozsa's Overture to a Symphony Concert has a fantastically fun bass trombone part! Jennifer Frautschi is performing Erich Wolgang Korngold's Violin Concerto with us and sounds incredible.

Miklos Rozsa and Double Indemnity

Each season, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra has a festival highlighting a particular composer. This season's festival is called Exiles in Hollywood, featuring the concert music of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Miklos Rozsa and Franz Waxman. In conjuction the ESO, the Gail Borden Public Library will be showing a trio of films scored by these giants of movie music.

The first film in the series will be Double Indemnity...Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 1pm. I will be introducing the film, talking about Miklos Rozsa's score and film noir. We will be performing Miklos Rozsa's Overture to a Symphony Concert on our May Classic Series.

Brass Soloists of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra

I will be performing a recital with a couple of my colleagues this Saturday, February 13th, 2010 at 4pm. Joining me are ESO horn player, Sharon Jones and ESO Principal Tubist, Charles Schuchat. Chris Thompson is also featured on piano. We will be performing at the Sherwood Conservatory Recital Hall at Columbia College. 1312 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60605

The recital is free and open to the public!

Sharon Jones will be performing two solo works: Partita by Verne Reynolds and Introduction and Allegro by Johann Kvandal. Sharon, Charles and I will be performing two trios for horn, euphonium and tuba: La Alfonsina by Johannes Ghislen and Spanish Dance No. 5 - Playera by Enrique Granados. The wonderful arrangement of Playera was done by Mr. Schuchat!

In the midst of all this, my solo performance will be of Christopher Gordon's Concerto for Bass Trombone. I have no way of verifying this, but I suspect that this will one of the first performances of this work in the United States. The concerto was commissioned by the Sydney Symphony. It was first premiered by bass trombonist, Christopher Harris and the Sydney Symphony in October of 2004.

I have a lot on my plate right now...which is a good thing. First of all, I need to let everyone know about a couple of upcoming recitals in February and March.

Brass Soloists of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra

February 13, 2010 at 4pm

Sherwood Conservatory Recital Hall at Columbia College

Joining me will be ESO Hornist Sharon Jones and ESO Principal Tubist Charles Schuchat. I will be performing Christopher Gordon's Concerto for Bass Trombone, as well as playing euphonium on a couple of brass trios.

In the last week of March, I will be giving a guest recital and masterclass at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia in Athens.

As a part of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra's Exiles in Hollywood Festival this season, the Gail Borden Public Library will be showing a series of films highlighting our featured composers. The three films to be shown are Double Indemnity (scored by Miklos Rozsa), Rebecca (scored by Franz Waxman) and The Seahawk (scored by Erich Wolfgang Korngold). Yours truly will be introducing each of these films and be giving some background on the composers.

I have a few other big projects in the pipeline which I need to keep "under wraps" for the time being. One of which, I am planning on having up and running in the next couple of months. All I can say at this time is that it will be very unique and hopefully a really good resource for students and professionals. More information to come soon!

Reed Capshaw is one of the premier free-lance musicians in the Chicago area. Currently, he is Principal Trombonist of the Lake Forest and South Bend Symphonies. Fun Trombone Video of the Week

I love this performance! First of all, La Forza del Destino by Giuseppe Verdi is one of my favorite overtures. Secondly, this arrangement for trumpet, trombone and piano works so well and is very exciting. It helps that it is performed by Christian Lindberg and Haken Hardenberger.

This video is originally from A Night at the Opera. I believe that the video is out of print, but you can still find it on Amazon. And yes, it is also the name a very famous Marx Brother film...

My posts during the month of December will be somewhat sporadic. This is always a very busy month for most freelance musicians.

A Blast from the Past

I can't begin to tell you how much fun it was to work with Carl Topilow again for the first time in 15 years. He put together a fantastic show with the ESO this past week. After every show this weekend, several of our patrons thanked me and expressed what a great time they had. They especially loved the showmanship of Maestro Carl Topilow. Pictured above are NRO alumni who performed with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra this weekend. Recommended Recording of the Week

In preparation for the ESO's Benny Goodman concerts this weekend, I having been listening to a lot of music from the Swing Era. The Benny Goodman Orchestra performed one of the first jazz concerts in Carnegie Hall and the recording of that event was one of the first long playing records. In addition to the great Benny Goodman Orchestra, this concert also features other jazz legends such as Count Basie, Lester Young and Johnny Hodges. While the clarinet solos by band leader Benny Goodman are outstanding, you also get to hear some great playing by trumpeter Harry James and vibraphone player Lionel Hampton! On top of all that, you are never going to hear a better performance of the Goodman staple Sing, Sing, Sing.

Fun Trombone Video of the Week

The great Frank Rosolino sings and plays Please Don't Bug Me. This video is from the 1962 television series, Jazz Scene USA. The dvd release of this episode featuring the Frank Rosolino Quartet is paired with an episode featuring Stan Kenton and His Orchestra. It's a favorite dvd in my collection. In one of the more interesting moments during the program, Oscar Brown, Jr. asks Mr. Rosolino about his golf game. "It was a gas...straight ahead, baby!" Although out of print, it can be found online easily.

Jay Friedman will appear as soloist along with CSO principal trumpet Chris Martin in Casterede's Concertino for Trumpet, Trombone and Orchestra. The concerts will take place on November 16th, 7:30PM at Governors State University, Monee, Illinois, and on November 18, 7:30PM at the Harris Theatre, Millennium Park, Chicago, Illinois. The concert will feature the Chicago College of Performing Arts Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Steven Squires. Chris Martin will also perform the Enesco Legend, in a new orchestration by Joseph Kreines, and the Jolivet Concertino for Trumpet and Orchestra. Admission is free.
